The face of an Indian statue of the Buddha from Sarnath near Benares (Varanasi) now placed in the British Museum in London

As it says on the sign by this statue: "The Buddha, Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, About 5th - 6th Century AD. The Buddha sits in a 'European posture' on a lion throne, his feet supported by a double lotus. Leogryphs and aquatic monsters, part of the elaborate throne back are visible beneath the halo. His hands joined before his chest appear in the dharmachakramudra, the gesture associated with his First Sermon at Sarnath outside Benares in which he elucidated his doctrine, decribed as 'setting in motion the Wheel of the Law'"
