Draft of Albrecht Durer's dedication to Bilibald Pirckheimer, c1523. Artist: Albrecht Dürer

Draft of Albrecht Durer's dedication to Bilibald Pirckheimer, c1523. Draft of the dedication to Pirckheimer, probably written in 1523, of his Four Books of Human Proportions, published, after his death, at Nurnberg in 1528. This draft differs from the dedication as ultimately printed, and a deleting line has been drawn through it with a pen from top to bottom. It ends abruptly, and only the first of the two existing pages is here reproduced. The detached signature is from a letter from Durer to Pirkheimer, relative to a painting of the Virgin, written from Venice and dated 23rd September 1506. From the fourth Series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899).
