Robert Julius Trumpler. Portrait of Robert Julius Trumpler (1886-1956), American astronomer. Born in Switzerland, he worked with the Swiss geodetic survey before moving to the Allegheny observatory in the USA (1915). He then moved to the Lick observatory (1919). While at Lick, he studied star clusters in our own galaxy. He found that the effect of light absorption in space led to distant clusters appearing fainter than they truly were. This led to a reappraisal of interstellar distances. In 1932 he was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. He was made a professor at the University of California in 1938.
