The valley is bounded by two ridges : on thenorthern one along the cross road which runsnearly the whole length of the position, ourarmy was posted in the form of a thin crescent ;on the southern ridge and the slopes leadingdown into the valley the French forces wereafterwards distributed, also, to some , increscent shape. These crescents had their tips advancedtowards each other, and enclosed in the ovalthus formed were two important strongholds—La Haye Sainte, in advance of our left centre^. WATERLOO. 57 and the chateau of Hougoumont, some distancein front of our right wing ; while away to theextreme left, the white buildings of Papelottepartly concealed Ter La Haye farm and thered-tiled hamlet of Smohain, the end of ourline in that direction. The cross-road which I have mentioned aslying along our position, and which was the a garden laid out in the French style, and asmaller garden full of currant bushes; barnsand quaint outbuildings clustering round thechateau, a brick wall about the height of a tallman, built on lower courses of grey stone,enclosing the garden, and at the east end of ita large open orchard ; from the north-westcorner, an avenue of ancient poplars winding
