African palm swift (Cypsiurus parvus). This small swift is found in most areas of Africa, and also in the Arabian Peninsula. It builds a nest from feathers that its glues to the underside of a palm leaf with its saliva. The saliva is also used to secure the eggs, of which there are normally two. The palm swift incubates the eggs by clinging with its claws to the vertical leaf surface. Swifts are agile birds that spend most of their time in the air, catching insects in flight. Photographed in Pretoria, South Africa.
