. The street railway review . inches in depth, heavy girder rails and cast iron yokes, with positive and negative conductor rails suspended by porcelain insula-tors, the electric plow having sliding contact with theconductor rails. (Jne of the most novel and interesting features of thiscompan\s system is the automatic change from theunderground to the overhead trolley, detaching theelectric plow while running at full speed, the generalplan and details of which are shown in the accompany-ing cuts. This is the joint invention of W. B. Upton, consulting engineer, S. G. Brosius, chief engineer andJoseph Colvin, electrical engineer of the road. The plow (when the car is on the conduit portion ofthe route) is in position on its supporting hangers, attached to the car truck, and is supplying current to themotors through automatic contact boxes. When the carapproaches the vault where its plow is to be rem>)ved,it is guided sideways by the curved slot rails till disen-gaged from the hangers, the rollers on the sides of the. plow having previously entered in the two channel railsbelow the surface, which carry it and guide it downthrough the traps into the vault, the car passing onwithout stop, and taking the overhead current. Theplow then travels around to position, to be attached tothe car on the return trip. The trap is opened, and closed by the vault tender. Figures i and 2show the plow and contact boxes in position on thetruck, the guide rollers in the channel rails. Figures 3and 4 show the plow and side view of the plow 5 and 6 show the end and side view of the plow, contact box and supporting carriers, figure 7 is thegeneral working drawing showing the plow pit asconstructed. Another good feature of supporting the plow on theopen hangers with the automatic contact boxes is theprevention of accidents to the plow or electrical appa-ratus at misplaced track switches, or b}- derailment of the (^ l?i^ll\aiWa)ll^ym\/ car; allowing the plow to drop automatica
