Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (March 21, 1839 - March 28, 1881) was a Russian composer, one of the group known as, The Mighty Handful. He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period and strove to achieve a Russian musical identity. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history and Russian folklore.
