Paul had come to Athens as a temporary refuge. His intention previously hadbeen to evangelise Macedonia, but at Beroea his progress had been broken off, andthat so suddenly that no other plan of operations had yet been substituted. He wasnow waiting at Athens for the arrival of Silas and Timothy from Beroea, that hemight concert with them the course of future operations. He was alone, and amongstrangers, and, bowed by infirmity, he had not proposed to unfold the banner of theGospel where the prospect was so inauspicious. But one of Pauls earnest and ardenttemperament could ill brook to remain long an idle spectator while the grossestsuperstition was staring him in the face. Hi
