Coral reef research. Pipette being used to add a tracking dye to an electrophoresis gel being used to analyse samples of genetic material from a coral. The technique being used here is denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). This technique separates DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fragments to create a genetic fingerprint of the community being studied. This is being done as part of a project to study the biology of coral reefs. Photographed at the University of Newcastle, UK.
