The woody creepers, themselvescovered by other creepers, were of greatthickness : some which I measured weretwo feet in circumference. Many of theolder trees presented a very curiousappearance from the tresses of a lianahanging from their boughs, and resemblingbundles of hay. If the eye was turnedm v from the world of foliage above, to the J^IM ^ n ground beneath, it was attracted by theextreme elegance of the leaves of the fernsand mimosae. The latter, in some parts, covered the surface with a brushwood only a few inches high.
