Life-size, seated figure of a 'luohan' (arhat) from Hebei province, China; hands on lap, on a plinth wearing green & brown robes with blue stripes, Liao dynasty (907-1125 CE), lead-glazed stoneware, British Museum, London. Luohan are disciples of the Buddha with magical powers who could stay alive indefinitely to preserve the Buddha's teachings. In China they were often shown in groups of sixteen or eighteen: with sets of 'luohan' statuesplaced along the side walls of a temple's entrance on either side of the main Buddha figure.
