Stefanie Reichelt, cell biologist, working on a laser-scanning confocal microscope. Dr. Reichelt obtained a PhD in the study of the cytoskeleton from Bonn University, Germany. She now works at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, on developing new microscopy techniques and applying them to biological questions. Confocal microscopy is a technique that detects light coming from an illuminated specimen only at the focal point of the microscope's objective lens, allowing a three- dimensional model to be built up from a series of optical \slices\"."
