A Desert Locust (Schistocerca gregaria) on volcanic land by English Bay Road, North Point on Ascension Island, South Atlantic


The Desert Locust is widespread throughout Africa and Asia and is a well known migrant. On Ascension the species is established and can become quite common after exceptional rains when there is ample grass which is its main food plant.
