Grey clouds view land-fast sea ice expanse towards calm sea with sun rays, beach east of St Annes, Fylde Coast, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast blocks of sea ice, several centimetres thick. Here we see a flat, wide expanse of land-fast sea ice, on the beach east of St Annes, looking south towards grey clouds with sun rays breaking through and shining on the surface of receding River Ribble Estuary seawater.
