The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (left side shot) is the red brick viaduct of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway built in 1849. A m span cast iron bridge takes the viaduct across the basin. In the middle of the shot the 1877 Cornbrook Viaduct, a red bricks, wrought iron truss girder construction, was deemed to be in better condition than the Great Northern Viaduct, so was chosen for refurbishment in 1990-91 and is currently used by Metrolink trams going to Altrincham. Right of shot rises the tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct, dating to 1894, and now disused. A view beneath the viaducts, from the east side of the basin.
