C12th stone keep of Henry II at Scarborough Castle, North Yorkshire, seen through later defences: walkway, curtain wall, bridge & barbican.

C12th rectangular stone keep of Scarborough Castle seen through later defences: walkway, curtain wall, bridge & barbican. Built by Plantagenet King Henry II (1154-89) to resemble the Norman White Tower in London. Put under siege by rebel Barons in 1312 and twice during the Civil War when the castle was blasted with canons. The tower was further damaged in WWI by shelling from German warships. The castle occupies the former sites of a prehistoric settlement & a fortified Roman signal station, on a prominent headland between two bays & with sheer drops to the sea.
