Tradition says Sir Walter Raleigh placed his cloak above a mud puddle to prevent Elizabeth I from muddying her shoes.
English aristocrat Sir Walter Raleigh (died 1618) was an explorer, courtier, poet, and soldier. He was also a favorite of queen Elizabeth I. Tradition said that he once stepped out from a crowd when he saw the queen about to step in a puddle and placed his cloak above it to prevent her from muddying her shoes- as pictured here in this 1917 illustration.
