Portrait of Philippus Baldaeus and Gerrit Mossopotam, 1668. Philippus Baldaeus was active as a minister for the VOC on Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1654 to 1665. Back in the Netherlands, he had this picture painted to commemorate his years of service overseas. The seated Baldaeus wears clothing he brought with him from Asia. He is probably joined here by Gerrit Mossopotam, who resided with Baldaeus in the Netherlands and may have assisted him in translating Christian texts.
