The Cathedral, built entirely ofmarble, is one of the best in N. Italy. Begun in 1396 in the Gothicstyle, it was altered in the Renaissance style by Tommaso Bodariin 1487-1526. The richly sculptured main portal and N. side-portalare specially noteworthy. Beside the former are statues (erected in1498) of the elder and younger Pliny, both of whom were nativesof Comum. — The little Piazza Volta, to the of the PiazzaCavour, contains a statue of Count Al.
