The fortress of Europe, overlooking the Bosphorus on the approach to Istanbul


Rumelihisarı viewed from the Bosphorus strait. Built by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1492 Rumelihisarı (also known as Rumelian Castle, Roumeli Hissar Castle and the fortress of Europe guards the western side of the narrowest point of the Bosphorus. It was used help cut off supplies to Constantinople during the Ottoman conquest.
