The Elbphilharmonie is being developed into the new city landmark of Hamburg to a design by Herzog & de Meuron. Hamburg holds the title of Europe's Green Capital 2011. The title, awarded by the European Commission, has been created to promote dialogue and competition to improve environmental awareness and practices in Europe's urban areas.
