Brake tests; a report of a series of road tests of brakes on passenger equipment cars made at Absecon, New Jersey, in 1913 . ted in Figs. 53, 55 and 56, but in this case plotted to show the rela-tive time to start an emergency application of the brakes and the timeto obtain full emergency brake cylinder pressure with the PM equipment, and the UC pneumatic and electro-pneumatic equipments. The rapidand uniform rate of application of the electro-pneumatic equipmentis very clearly shown by the curve when compared with the longer timerequired to start the application of the brakes and to reach the maxi-mum brake cylinder pressure, especially toward the rear end of thetrain when using the PM equipment. It will be noted that the UCequipment operating pneumatically was somewhat slow in startingcompared with the PM equipment and that although it reached itsmaximum pressure in about one-half the time required by the PMequipment on the train as a whole there was about three seconds re-quired to transmit the quick action from the head to the rear end ofthe train. This action of the valve when operating pneumatically 93. Fig. 56. BRAKE CYLINDER PRESSURE, UC ELECTRO-PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT. With the electric control it is possible to have the brake fully applied on the 12 cars in two seconds. This diagram when compared with Fig. 53 shows the striking advantage of this method of control. 94 M. p. 4n D Pennsylvania Railroad Company ^ Baltdiorb & Wabhdvotoh Railboad Co]n>AVT NOBTBEHIt CBNTBAL RaILWAT COHFAJCT WuT Jkb«bt & Sbabhorb Railboad CompajitTEST DEPARTMENT K-IS-U Shbbt NoJBSdEd £g/R4/C£.7-£rSZS-W^ S. /?.
