IV/^ W6HT OIL Fig. 129—Assembly of the Oil Plate Condenser. of the condenser of the closed circuit, a back pressure is exerted on the secondary windingof the high voltage transformer. Although the impedance of the spark gap circuit is so lowcompared to that of the secondary winding of the transformer that the spark leaps the gapin preference, the discharge of the condenser may cause sufficient difference of potential between the turns of thesecondary units of thetransformer to puncture theinsulation and short circuitadjacent layers. Possiblepunctures from this sourcemay be obviated by meansof choking coils of rela-tively high self inductanceconnected between thetransformer and the con-denser as shown at N andN2, Fig. 130. These coilsconsist of a few turns of finewire wound in the form ofa spiral, or in a single layeron a porcelain, glass or hardrubber tube. They offer butlittle impedance to the lowfrequency current flowingfrom the secondary windingFig. 129a—Marconi Gla
