Ireland's crusade against tuberculosis; being a series of lectures delivered at the Tuberculosis Exhibition, 1907 . of insti-tutions, and whilst a certain number are essential for thetreatment of such cases as cannot otherwise be safelytreated, we think that local authorities must beencouraged, having secured the isolation of the mostinfectious cases, to look to educative measures as themeans by which a large number of their cases can betreated with due precautions in their own homes. Theinstitutional treatment must be, therefore, regarded asessential only in such cases as cannot be suitably treatedelsewhere, and its influence must be regarded as largelyeducative. For economic reasons, if for no other, localauthorities should beware of expensive buildings ; withinreasonable limits, the cheaper and more temporary thebuildings are the better, and the influence of the architectand the builder, except so far as they comply with theserequirements, should be sternly resisted, otherwisemoney will be wasted where it is so sadly needed for deal-ing with this the most pressing of all Irish problems. 1 I 114.
