GIOTTO di Bondone (b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze) Crucifix 1310-17 Tempera on wood, 430 x 303 cm Tempio Malatestiano, Rimini Giotto's stay in Rimini, which was recorded by contemporary chroniclers, must have preceded the decoration of the Arena Chapel in Padua. The precocious flowering of a Riminese school of painting clearly inspired by his art bears witness to this; in addition, the Rimini school appears to reflect a stage in Giotto's development close to his work at Assisi. Direct evidence of his having worked at Rimini is provided by this Crucifix which, unfortunately, has lost the panels once attached to the cross-limb and and apex. One panel showing the Redeemer and found in an English private collection in this century is thought to be the top panel of the Cricifix. This painting is a nobler version of the Santa Maria Novella Crucifix (also better preserved), already showing tendencies of the artist's mature treatment of the subject. *** Keywords: ************* Author: GIOTTO di Bondone Title: Crucifix Time-line: 1301-1350 School: Italian Form: painting Type: religious
