Takingup civil engineering, he was appointed asCity Engineer of Webb City, Mo., quittinghis position to enter the Second OfficersTraining Camp at Fort Sheridan, where hewas assigned to the 5th Company and re-ceived a commission as captain. Hesailed for France on Christmas Day, Briggs underwent further train-ing in the School of the Line at Langres,Haute-Marne. He was assigned to the305th Infantry in May, 1918, and put incommand of Company E, serving withthat outfit until his death. He was twicewounded by shell fire before the attackin the Argonne which brought his was married to Miss Mabel Balsley, ofJoplin, Mo., on November 17, 1915. Be-sides his widow he left a daughter, Mar-jorie Jane, aged two years and fourmonths. His wife resides at 218 WestSeventh Street, Joplin. His mo
