A ewe tends to her newborn lamb during Transhumance journey, Gorges de Pennafort, Provence, South of France

Picture was taken during the 1960s, originally a Kodachrome slide. The transhumance is the herding of sheep from their winter to their summer pastures, in this case, up into the foothills of the French Alps. Before motorization the journey would be done on foot, a group of shepherds herding 3000 sheep some 120 miles. This is an incredible archive of photographs from this era and of this journey: images that evoke a time long gone and a tradition much changed.
