In addition, a hurricane watch remains in effect for portions of central and eastern Cuba. As of 8 EDT (1200 GMT), Dennis was located 230 miles southeast of Havana, Cuba, and about 285 miles south-southeast of Key West, Florida. The storm was moving northwest at 12 mph, but was expected to start moving west-northwest. Navy ships have been sortied out of Naval Station Pascagoula and personnel on board Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have used heavy steel shutters to protect base personnel. The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
