A Tibetan woman in traditional dress stops to pray in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The Potala Palace was constructed in 1645 to 1683. The over 1,000 room palace was built by the 5th Dalai Lama and occupied by the country's ruler and government until 1959 by the 14th and current Dalai Lama who fled his country to Dharamsala, India following the 1959 Chinese Army invasion of Tibet. The Potala Palace was listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1984. The structure is at 3,500 meters above sea level.
