Passenger pigeon, Ectopistes migratorius, hunted to extinction in America by the early 20th century. Handcoloured steel engraving by William Lizars after an illustration by Edward Lear from Prideaux John Selby's volume "Pigeons" in Sir William Jardine's "Naturalist's Library: Ornithology," published by Lizars, Edinburgh, 1835. Artist Edward Lear (1812-1888), today most famous for his literary nonsense and limericks, was a skilled ornithological artist who published "Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae or Parrots" in 1832.
