He became (according to Meursius in 1599, according to the resolutions of curators on January 10, 1600) on the recommendation of Prince Maurits together with Simon Fransz. Van Merwen appointed professor in the 'Nedduytsche Mathematicque' in Leiden. Calculated the number PI (the ratio between the circumference and the center line of a circle) in 35 decimal places.
