Saint Margaret’s Church, West Hoathly, West Sussex, England: modern brass memorial in the south aisle to Ann Tree who was burnt at the stake in the High Street of East Grinstead on 18 July 1556, during the reign of Queen Mary. A note on the inscription explains that the memorial was created in 1940 by George Friend. Parish resident Ann Tree, ‘Mother Tree’, who is depicted here holding a bible, was one of three Sussex Martyrs burned on the same day in East Grinstead High Street for refusing to return to the teachings of Rome. Thomas Cranmer, the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury, was burnt to death the same year, 1556. The accession to the throne of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary in 1553 temporarily destroyed the English Reformation. St Margaret’s Church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch, was built in the late 1000s and extended in around 1200. West Hoathly is an ancient hilltop settlement in West Sussex, where evidence of human activity dates back up to 12,000 years. The name Hoathly derives from Hadlega and then Hothelegh, the Anglo-Saxon word for a heather-covered clearing.
