Ayr Auld Kirk, Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. The church came about because Oliver Cromwell wanted the area which contained the old Church of St John the Baptist to erect his citadel and, in particular, the church and tower to act as an armoury. In lieu of this he gave money with which the present church was built on the site of what had been a Franciscan Monastery. In 1652/54 a t-shaped church was built to the designs of Theophilius Rankeine
