Leningrad (St Petersburg). Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov statue (B,18Mar1844-8June1908). Born wealthy, Rimsky Korsakov served with the Russian Navy all his life. Beginning 1859 Rimsky-Korsakov took lessons in piano and composition from Kanille who later introduced him to Mily Balakirev. Through him he became one of the five, a circle of Russian composers made famous during 1856-1870. In 1871, Rimsky-Korsakov became Professor of Practical Composition and Instrumentation at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, In 1873 he was Inspector of Music Bands of the Navy Department. He wrote a set of variations on a theme of Glinka for oboe, a concerto for trombone and a Konzertstück for clarinet, all with the accompaniment of wind band. He studied Russian church music and wrote his textbook on harmony for classes he taught. "May Night" the story had long been a favorite of his, and his wife had been instrumental in getting him to write the opera of it. The 'Snow Maiden' came next with ease. He became paralyzed creatively from 1881 to 1888. He kept busy by editing Mussorgsky's works and completing Borodin's Prince addition, the Russian Symphony Concerts he gave coaxed him out of his creative drought, he wrote Scheherazade, Capriccio espagnol and the Russian Easter Overture specifically for them. In his later years he completed an opera approximately every 18 months—a total of 11 between 1893 and 1908. His scientific treatment on orchestration set a new standard for texts of its kind. He agreed with Tschaikovsky rarely but they were of one opinion on this: "you had to write constantly. If you can't write a major work, write minor trifles. If you can't write at all, orchestrate something."
