Grave of William Dumberfield in Piddletrenthide churchyard in Dorset, purportedly the inspiration for the D'Urberville name


The head stone of William Dumberfield who died in 1646 in Piddletrenthide supposedly one of the inspirations for the D'urberville family in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Hardy also worked as an architect for Hicks of Dorchester who had earlier restored the church
