PICPUS CEMETERY
PICPUS CEMETERY, PARIS (75), 12TH ARRONDISSEMENT, CREATED DURING THE REVOLUTION'S TURMOIL, THE PICPUS CEMETERY IS THE ONLY PRIVATE CEMETERY IN PARIS THAT IS STILL USED. IT HAS TWO COMMON GRAVES IN WHICH WERE BURIED THE BODIES OF THE 1,306 PEOPLE GUILLOTINED ON PLACE DE LA NATION (ONCE CALLED PLACE DU TRONE, THEN RENAMED AT THE TIME PLACE DU TRONE RENVERSE) BETWEEN JUNE 14 AND JULY 27, 1794. THE CEMETERY IS RESERVED ONLY FOR MEMBERS OF THE VICTIMS' FAMILIES, WHO BOUGHT THE PROPERTY, AS CONCESSIONS, IN JUNE 1802. RENTED SINCE 1804 TO THE NUNS OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE SACRE-COEURS DE JESUS ET DE MARIE AND OF THE ADORATION PERPETUELLE, THE LAND STILL BELONGS TO THE HEIRS OF THE FIRST PURCHASERS. DURING SIX WEEKS OF ACTIVITY ON THE PLACE DE LA NATION, THE GUILLOTINE HAD MORE VICTIMS - 1306 AS OPPOSED TO 1120 – THAN DURING THE THIRTEEN PREVIOUS MONTHS WHEN IT HAD BEEN SET UP ON THE PLACE DE LA REVOLUTION (TODAY THE PLACE DE LA CONCORDE). THE FALL OF ROBESPIERRE ON JULY 29, 1794, PUT AN END TO THE EXECUTIONS.
