Hippocampal neuron. Fluorescent micrograph of a neuron (nerve cell, centre) from the hippocampus, surrounded by glial cells (support cells). Spectrin, a cytoskeleton protein that lines the intracellular side of plasma membranes is red. Tubulin, another cytoskeleton protein, is green. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport, structure and motility of the cell, as well as segregating the chromosomes during nuclear division. The hippocampus is the part of the brain responsible for long-term memory.
