One Union soldier was killed, a buglerand an adjutant taken prisoner. The Confederates lost seven Jdlled. andthree made prisoners. Rhodes was reduced to the ranks that same night for sounding anadvance when retreat had been ordered. At Waterloo Bridge, Va., he came up serenely, however, and when tenvolunteers were called for to burn the bridge under the enemys was the first to tender his services. Every one. witli the exceptionof him, was either killed or wounded. He distinguished liiniseif in thisaffair through his pluck and a bottle of a:<; UJ I C5 Z < o CO QO I AMERICAN HEROISM. 43 One of the volunteers was carrying a quantity of turpentine with whichto start the conflagration, when he was struck by a bullet, and, in falling,chopped the liquid. Rhodes, who was in advance, ran back, picked up the turpentine, dashedat full speed to the center of the bridge, and broke the bottle over thelunidles of wood w^hich had been prepared for igniting the structure. The bridge was destroyed, and the purpose of the cavalry accomplished. Shortly after this, Rhodes was detached from his regiment on special dutyas a scout for General John Buford of cavalry fame, and again distinguishedhimself.
