Nobody could findout who gave the order; itwas spontaneous, and just ata most critical moment, whenthe regiment was badlyneeded to assist in capturingthat strong position. General Longstreet, inhis Memoirs—Manassas toAppomattox, says as to theassault in December, 1862 : A series of braver, moredesperate charges than thosehurled against the troops inthe sunken road was never known, and piles and cross-piles ofdead marked a field such as I never saw before or since.(Page 315.)
