William Stanley (1435-1495). 1864 illustration of the English soldier and Lord Chamberlain to Henry VII, Sir William Stanley. Stanley fought in several battles of the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487). He is best known for his action at the Battle of Bosworth (22nd August 1485), where he helped defeat the Yorkists led by Richard III, helping to secure Henry VII's victory. In gratitude Henry bestowed many favours on Stanley, including the new post of Lord Chamberlain. In 1495 Stanley was convicted of treason and executed for his support of the pretender to the English throne Perkin Warbeck.
