Historic Traversing of Previously Impassable McClure Strait by Icebreakers CGC Northland and Navy USS Burton Island. 13 August 1954 - Crewmen watch from the wedge-like nose of the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind, as it drives through previously impassable McClure Strait, Banks Island, Canadian Northwest Territory. The ship is the first to execute passage through the ice-blocked Strait from the west to east entrance, from the Arctic Ocean.
