This regiment was first broughtunder fire at the battle of Cedar Mountain, near Culpeper, in it was that Capt. Shurtleff fell on the 9th of August, 1862, at the ageof twenty-four years. His death was instantaneous; a ball having passedthrough his chest as he raised himself to caution his men against unneeessaiyexposure, they lying on the ground by command of their general body of Capt. Shurtleff was embalmed, sent home for burial, andwas deposited at Blount Auburn with military honors, after an imposingceremonial at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. LIEUT.
