SYDNEY, Australia — Buildings of Sydney's Central Business District with the Centrepoint Tower in the center
Photograph by David Coleman. The Sydney skyline is one of the most recognizable urban vistas in the world, dominated by two iconic structures: the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Located on the east coast of Australia, Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the country's largest city. The skyline is set against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour, a natural harbor that is considered one of the world's most beautiful. The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, opened in 1973 and has become synonymous with the city. Its distinctive sail-like roof shells make it a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. In 2007, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the Opera House is Circular Quay, a major transport hub and popular area for tourists and locals alike. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as "The Coathanger" due to its arch-based design, opened in 1932. It connects the central business district with the North Shore and is both a vital transport link and a major landmark. The bridge is the world's largest steel arch bridge, though not the longest. Sydney's Central Business District (CBD) features a mix of historic and modern architecture, with skyscrapers that form the city's financial and commercial heart. The area known as The Rocks, at the foot of the Harbour Bridge, is the site of the first European settlement in Australia and now hosts markets, restaurants, and galleries in restored 19th-century buildings
