WWI, Above Knee Amputation Class, 1919
A group of men with above knee amputations are standing in the courtyard between two buildings; straps over their shoulders are attached to a prosthesis which appears to be a metal frame attached to a peg. The last war to see amputation on a vast scale was the First World War, where 42,000 amputations were carried out.
