Cause 8 shouldonly be assumed after all other remedies have been ap-. FIG. 48. plied. Cause 9 is really the only one that may be puz-zling. The motorman or conductor usually knowsenough to turn on the lamp circuit to see if the poweris forthcoming at the station. If such is the case the 120 ELECTRIC RAILWAY GAZETTE. Vol. XIII. No. §. lamps will almost invariably light up. However, it iswell to be sure the lamp circuit is in order before as-suming- the indications to be proof positive that thetrolley wire is dead. Often the lamps will light up andstill the motor will fail to start when everything- is inapparent good order. If such is the case attach a wireto the car truck and carry it forward to the rail in front,or to the rear rail, and make a good firm contact betweenthe rail and the wire. On throwing on the controllerthe difficulty will usually disappear.
