Detail of the Tower, West Window and Upper Structure of Saint Martin's Church, Cathedral Close, Exeter, Devon.

Tower, window and architectural detail of Saint Martin's Church in Cathedral Close, Exeter. This image was taken on a bright February day with a vivid blue sky. Saint Martin's Church is the oldest building in Exeter with the site being consecrated by Bishop Leofric in 1065. Most of the church was refurbished between 1420 and 1455, the West Window being presented by Bishop Lacey. Very little of the old historic Exeter City Centre survives today due to heavy bombing in 1942. Saint Martin's Church is situated next to the famous Mol's coffee house, thought to have been constructed in 1410 by the Cathedral Authorities to provide housing for priests known as 'Annuellars'. Their role was to carry out requested duties for deceased city residents, to visit and comfort their relatives and to maintain a lit candle in remembrance for them.
