Shackleton's 1914-16 Antarctic expedition. British explorer Ernest Shackleton commanded Endurance as part of a crew of 28. They sailed east from South Georgia (upper centre) on 5 December 1914. Trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea in January 1915, the ship sunk in October 1915. The crew marched and camped on the pack ice with their lifeboats. They sailed and rowed through sea ice from 9-15 April 1916 to land on Elephant Island (centre left). Shackleton and five others made an epic voyage to South Georgia in a lifeboat, arriving in May 1916. After a march across the island interior, the remaining crew on Elephant Island were rescued by 30 August 1916.
