This photo, which dates to around the 1920s, shows people picking groundnuts by hand, also known as peanuts in the southern part of the United States. Another name for these nuts is goober. The English call them monkety nuts. The process of picking was slow and tedious, as was the growing and harvesting. George Washington Carver and his analysis of peanuts and their potential uses popularized the peanut.
