HIV research. Microbiologist working in a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) to conduct a test in order to validate a rapid human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) nucleic acid extraction and amplification process. The BSC provides a negatively-pressurised experimental setting under the flow hood that allows no air flow to escape back into the laboratory. Using this negatively pressurised, hooded environment any airborne pathogens are drawn back into the hooded container and up into a filtered ventilation system, avoiding the spread of contaminants through the laboratory.
