China: ‘The Map of Cooper Peak’. Hanging scroll painting by Li Shan (c. 1686-1762), 18th century. Li Shan (c. 1686-1762) was a Chinese painter from Jiangsu active during the Qing Dynasty. Already a noteworthy painter by the time he turned 16, Li Shan was inspired by Ming Dynasty painter Shitao and developed a style known for an unrestricted quality. He became known as the one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, and also served as a magistrate for a county in Shandong.
